This position will provide health education support to the Maine CDC’s Toxicology and Environmental Epidemiology Program (TEEP) and to the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry’s (DACF) PFAS Response Program. The PFAS Public Health Educator will work with DACF’s PFAS Response Program team to develop educational materials about PFAS in agricultural soils, water, plants, and animals, and will deliver those materials to appropriate audiences. The PFAS Public Health Educator will also work with the Maine CDC TEEP team to develop, evaluate, and update health communication materials related to PFAS as well as materials in support of the DACF PFAS Fund’s program to facilitate access to PFAS blood serum testing for eligible individuals, and will distribute those materials to impacted residents and clinical audiences. This position will also support TEEP program activities to promote testing of private well water for a range of contaminants, and to make free well water tests available to low-income Mainers.

Essential Job Functions:

· Develop, design, write, and edit clear and compelling print and web products, including fact sheets, frequently asked question documents, template letters, webpage content, and social media content.

· Coordinate standardized educational outreach to affected residents, healthcare providers, farmworkers, and/or community members.

· Coordinate with graphic designers for development or revision of printed and digital materials.

· Assist with mailing of educational materials such as brochures, tip sheets, etc.

· Develop, maintain, and improve content for PFAS webpages for TEEP and contribute content to the DACF website (https://www.maine.gov/dacf/ag/pfas/index.shtml)

· Present educational materials publicly through interviews, presentations, and written materials.

· Assist with regular reporting of progress and milestones to PFAS Fund managers.

· Attend relevant meetings, work sessions, and conferences.

· Travel within the state to support education and outreach efforts, in-person trade shows, conferences, and/or stakeholder meetings may be required, with mileage reimbursed.

Job requirements

Knowledge, Qualifications and Skills: 

Required:

Master’s degree in public health, communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or other relevant field and one (1) year of relevant professional experience; or equivalent combination of a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and three (3) years of related experience. Exceptional writing, interpersonal communication skills, presentation skills and demonstrated cultural competence are essential.

Preferred candidates will also have:

· Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to develop plain language messages about complex information

· The ability to gather, synthesize, and summarize a variety of information

· Knowledge of the methods and techniques of disseminating health education information effectively

· Demonstrated skill in applying best practices and standards for health communication, page layout, and information design

· Skilled in writing and developing digital content for various platforms

· The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external partners

· Skilled in the use of standard computer software packages, including Microsoft Office programs and graphic design software

· Able to give presentations about basic program information and to conduct trainings for a variety of audiences

· Able to work on multiple projects consecutively while maintaining accuracy, paying attention to detail, and meeting project deadlines

· Able to function effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team environment

Please note, because this position is embedded at Maine CDC, this position is required to work in-person at a Maine CDC Office at least two days per week and will follow the State of Maine Tele-Work policy.
