Position Type: Full Time Consultant with New England Rural Health Association (NERHA), position runs through July 31, 2025, with potential for extension.

Level: Mid-level

Location: Resides in New England with the ability to travel to state and regional meetings with occasional national travel

The Environmental Health Outreach Specialist works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, other association staff, and the NERHA Board of Directors to serve the diverse members of the Association across the six-state region. This role is responsible for oversight of Environmental Health projects such as the EPA Environmental Justice Thriving Communities (EJ TC TAC), Technical Assistance for Brownfields (TAB), and other projects as assigned which could include Northern Border’s technical assistance, assistance with conference planning, and external liaison activities.

Position Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Provides project management for the EPA EJ TC TAC and TAB projects including training and technical assistance, and coordination with UConn staff.

  • Meet regularly with the UConn TAB and TC TAC team and program partners to discuss project planning and project deliverables.

  • Schedule in-person and online meetings, round-table discussions, educational outreach, and/or brownfield site visits with UConn TAB/TC TAC staff and local government representatives, non-profit leaders, and other interested community stakeholders.

  • Develops and manages environmental health training and educational events, webinars, and conference sessions, including the annual NERHA Rural Health Conference.

  • Completes or oversees the completion of all progress reports and other documentation for funding agreements and assigned projects.

  • Develop internships/clerkships for students to work on the EJ TCTAC project as interprofessional community-based learning.

  • Responsible for the development of environmental and climate communications including monthly newsletters, print publications, email blasts and other NERHA communications

  • Incorporate Environmental/Energy/Climate/Civic Justice concepts in NERHA Policy Committee agenda and Board meetings.

  • Maintains effective public relations for the Association.

  • Ability to travel to attend state and regional meetings and represent the Association as deemed appropriate.

  • Other duties as assigned by leadership

Job requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare, Environmental Studies, Health Education, Public Health or equivalent, required

  • Rural lived or professional experience

  • Social determinants of health or community health experience, particularly in the rural context

  • Regional knowledge and experience preferred

  • Grant/project management experience

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative

  • Technical capabilities including virtual meetings, shared virtual drives, and project management system

  • Strong written and oral communication skills required to audiences such as legislative, health care leaders, community etc.

Conditions of Work:

Full-time consultant position (Monday - Friday, 9-5 pm with some flexibility)

Remote home office capability with internet access

Resides in New England with the ability to travel to state and regional meetings with occasional national travel
